Truth and Bias in the Bayeux Tapestry

Picture
In conversation with author David Musgrove, editor of the HistoryExtra podcast and co-author of The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry, about the forthcoming exhibition at the British Library, about the cultural and political importance of this mysterious one-thousand-year-old embroidery, and the extraordinary women who were written out of it.

Tapestry fully revised

Two women, ten centuries apart, an astonishing secret.

As England moves inexorably towards the Norman Conquest, Leofgyth, a gifted embroiderer, witnesses the rivalries, betrayals and private lives behind history's most famous events. Through her eyes, the Bayeux Tapestry comes vividly to life, not through the ambitions of kings alone, but through the women whose artistry and courage have been all but erased from history.

Medieval historian Madeleine Broder inherits an eleventh-century manuscript connected to the Bayeux Tapestry, and believes she has discovered an extraordinary work of historical fiction. But as she translates its faded Latin, she encounters the unforgettable voice of Leofgyth. Spanning a thousand years, Tapestry is an immersive dual-timeline historical novel about love, loss, resilience and the women whose voices history almost forgot. Perfect for readers of Tracy Chevalier, Geraldine Brooks and Maggie O'Farrell.

Publishing your book

Join indie publisher Archetype Books’ Kylie Fitzpatrick and Michael Phillips for three upbeat workshops (7, 14 & 21 October), taking you on an informative jaunt into the world of writing and producing books.
Picture
7 October, Workshop 1: How strong is your idea?
Literary agents and publishers say they’re looking for new voices and fresh voices, but some are also looking for very specific types of books. So should we write the book we want to write, or conform to genre?

14 October, Workshop 2: How to self-edit
Editing is just another word for writing. The editing process is often the most creative and exciting part of turning a first draft into a publishable book. We’ll look at the different stages of editing, and share some hacks to help you self-edit.

21 October, Workshop 3: Getting it published An exploration of the traditional publishing model and the many self-publishing options. Lots of time for Q&A!

Come along for a cosy, candle-lit evening of transformational writing, guided by me, downstairs At The Chapel. I’ve been curating gentle but powerful writing techniques and exercises since completing doctoral studies in Creative Writing, and then practitioner training in the psychotherapy, Focusing.

Neuroscience is catching up with what writers and thinkers have always known: that writing is good for us. It calms the anxious mind, finds meaning when a personal or global narrative might seem senseless, and restores the balance of inner and outer.

Places are limited and these workshops can fill up quickly. Please email me to book and I will provide payment details.
