The Hero's Journey1st September 2021 — 7:00pm to 8:30pm — OnlineThe Hero’s Journey is the writer’s map, providing all that is vital to brilliant, page-turning storytelling in a few key milestones. In this evening masterclass, author, editor and academic Kylie Fitzpatrick uses contemporary examples to highlight the patterns that define some of our greatest stories, and encourages you to assess which of these apply to your own writing. This is an opportunity to use the Hero’s Journey as a check-list for your own work, and a means of developing a rescue plan if you’ve been unable to put your finger on why your narrative doesn’t quite work. You’ll be encouraged to ask key questions of your heroines and heroes, as well as their quests. What makes them leave the familiarity of their safe, ordinary life and go into their version of the unknown? And does your reader want to go along as your plot unfolds? This is a session open to writers of all genres and experience. The six key stages of the Hero’s Journey are about character – and therefore story – progression, so whether the map of your protagonist leads to the ends of the earth or just to the bottom of the garden, the same guidance applies. And all in the hope of searching for the same outcome: to become an author of a journey that will grip readers from first page to last. Booking & payment
The workshop fee of £30 (incl. VAT) is payable in full online. This is a live online event which will be presented using video conferencing software. There are things that I will always use and be aware of. I will jump at any chance to do another short course with you and have recommended you to several people. You are an extraordinary teacher. I admire you hugely. Thank you for a brilliantly structured course that was a sanctuary and wonderful cerebral experience. I know my writing has improved as a result of the course. I am so grateful. Selina ... rich ideas lifted from depth psychologyI got a great deal from Kylie's course on 'Writing for wellbeing’ which brought together a range of rich ideas lifted from depth psychology, poetry, creative writing and myriad magical sources that Kylie expertly drew upon. Kylie guided us through different writing techniques calmly and skilfully, with her experience of and enthusiasm for the methods shining through. The course, and Kylie, are one of a kind. I would recommend the course to anyone who is keen to experiment more with writing and get a sense of the deep benefits that it can bring. Amy ... the need to be kinder[The course] has enabled me to begin to come to terms with a few things and given fresh perspective on others, including the need to be kinder to all aspects of myself. I appreciated the time to explore issues present in our lives.

The Hero’s Journey, aka classic story structure, is a writer’s survival kit, providing all that is vital to brilliant storytelling in a few key stages. Does your central character, hero or heroine, have a reason to leave their ordinary, everyday world and go on a journey into the unknown, and does each stage of their journey draw your reader more deeply into the narrative? The journey might be to the ends of the earth or just to the garden shed, but if you, the author, know the way, your story will grip readers from first page to last. The hero’s journey is, arguably, the pattern that all narratives naturally take; it is a check-list for your survival kit and a rescue plan in the event of road-blocks. It is the way the very best tales have been told since written storytelling began, and how bestsellers get written! Picture: Lancelot on the Grail quest, one of the first hero’s journeys |

Belconnen Arts Centre, Canberra, Australia
This course is for anyone who feels drawn to enhance their wellbeing and to discover, or rediscover, meaning in their life. You do not need to be ‘a writer’ to write. Writing that affects always comes from the heart, and the intent beneath the words, rather than the words themselves. In Writing from the Heart you will learn techniques and exercises that you can draw on any time, any place, and which will connect you with your authentic, essential self.

This course is for writers of all abilities and experience and for those interested in fiction and non-fiction alike. What does it mean to ‘have a voice’ as a writer? Voice is something deeply personal, impossible to fake and almost as difficult to define. Voice is more than the expression of an opinion or an attitude, it is each individual writer’s most powerful tool for channelling ideas.
Kylie is now a Research Fellow at the Australian National University and working as a screenwriter on a 3D projection.
